The Opportunity Card makes it easier for candidates to find work in Germany. It enables applicants to work in Germany without a lengthy recognition procedure. The prerequisite is (at least) two years of vocational training or a university degree and sufficient knowledge of German (A1) or English (B2).

The Opportunity Card entitles the holder to take a two-week trial job or part-time job (up to 20 hours a week). Candidates holding the Opportunity Card are allowed to stay in Germany for one year. During this time, the focus should be on finding a job. It is possible to extend your stay with the Opportunity Card by up to two additional years. You must apply for this at the local Foreigners’ Registration Office.

Working with the Opportunity Card in Germany

Points Criteria for the Germany Opportunity Card:

  1. Educational Qualifications (Up to 20 Points)

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent: 10-15 points

    • Master’s Degree or higher: 15-20 points

    • Recognized vocational training: 10-15 points

  2. Work Experience (Up to 20 Points)

    • 1-3 years of relevant work experience: 10 points

    • 4-6 years of relevant work experience: 15 points

    • Over 6 years of relevant work experience: 20 points

  3. Language Skills (Up to 15 Points)

    • Basic German skills (A1/A2): 5 points

    • Intermediate German skills (B1/B2): 10 points

    • Advanced German skills (C1/C2): 15 points

    • English proficiency (B2 or higher) may also add 5-10 points, especially for jobs where English is the primary language.

  4. Age (Up to 10 Points)

    • 18-25 years: 10 points

    • 26-35 years: 8 points

    • 36-40 years: 5 points

    • Over 40 years: 0 points

  5. Connection to Germany (Up to 10 Points)

    • Previous study or work experience in Germany: 5-10 points

    • Relatives living in Germany: 5 points

  6. Additional Factors (Up to 5 Points)

    • Proof of financial stability to support yourself during the job search: 5 points.

Although the exact minimum points requirement has not been officially confirmed, a threshold of around 50-60 points is anticipated based on similar programs.
