To work in Canada for a specified duration, eligible foreign nationals, including those from India, can obtain a work permit visa. This legal document allows foreign workers to lawfully engage in employment within Canada. In most cases, temporary foreign workers, including those applying for a Canada work permit from India, require this document to work in the country. Additionally, depending on their home country or citizenship, they may also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada.

Work permits are of two types:

Open Work Permit

With the exception of companies that have violated employment regulations or enterprises that deal in sex, such as strip clubs, escort services, or erotic massage parlors, you are able to work for any employer in Canada with an open work permit. Since an open work visa is not job-specific, you can apply for one without a successful Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The spouses of foreign students studying in Canada are eligible for an open work permit. A student can easily obtain a work visa in Canada.

You must meet specific eligibility requirements and submit an application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in order to apply for a work permit in Canada. Depending on the type of work visa you are asking for, the conditions and application procedure could change.

Employer-Specific Work Permit

A foreign worker is legally able to work for a certain employer for a set amount of time with an employer-specific work permit. This kind of work permit specifies the employer's name, the time period, and, if relevant, the place of employment. It is also known as a closed-work permit, and it is contingent upon a job offer from a Canadian employer that is backed by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) that demonstrates that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is now available to fill the position being offered to the applicant. This is a requirement for employment in Canada.
